Vincent Brown -Artist's Statement
"How we judge people visually, although dictated to some degree by our preconceptions and over generalization, is also dependent upon our personal experiences because of the subjects likeness to an already familiar person or the conveyance of emotion through posture or expression as well as an individuals attire and surroundings.
Within my work I hope to embrace all of these elements to convey as much as possible of the sitter and the intended aspects of the work, without constraining myself with medium, technique or any aspect of the creative process."

“ Supper at Aardman “
I was selected as the winner of The Holburne Portrait Prize by judges for my painting of my parents 'Artist's parents (after Dix), with the prize being a £5000 commission to paint a person connected with the arts in the south west. I chose the directors of Bristol based Aardman Animations as I had been a fan of their work since childhood with the character Morph.
The inspiration for the painting came from the Aardman films, the use of lighting, the parody of classic films within their work leading to the parody of Caravaggios' 'Supper at Emmaus’ in my composition. I felt it important for the final piece to be amusing and not too serious or formal and even included one of Nick Parks' classic gags from Wallace and Gromit with the headline 'Dog Reads Newspaper' on the newspaper the dog is reading. At the time of the sittings Aardman were as busy as ever, Nick Park was completing the latest Wallace and Gromit 'A Matter of Loaf and Death' and Peter Lord was just beginning 'Pirate' and so it was not possible to have them sit at the same time, subsequently the work was based upon individual sittings of only half an hour.
