Art has long been regarded as a strong and safe investment. Investment in paintings was discussed recently on Bloomberg television as a sound investment as a hard asset like Gold, Platinum Silver etc. Also Ellen Kelleher a personal finance journalist for The Financial Times recently wrote an article recommending the purchase of Art, particularly in the $500 - $50,000 range as a sound long term investment with an impressive current average annual increase of 9.7 percent. Victor Henderson
I work primarily in watercolour. I work directly and without any preparatory drawing. I often do some rapid on-site colour wash and line and then in the studio I will work on two or three papers moving from one to the other to allow for the varied drying times of different papers and paint and changing colour, brushes, or using what comes to hand to make a mark. I use washout and resists or texture the paper before painting in an attempt to surprise myself with an unexpected result.
It is this constant balancing act between accident and technique which I love. For me the fluidity and transparency of the medium is its strength. I am largely self taught, having painted in watercolours since secondary school.
My working life has been spent in the NHS in mental health. I retired in 2007 from a Joint appointment as adult psychotherapist with the Lansdowne clinic in Glasgow and as Lecturer in the Health faculty of Glasgow Caledonian University. Although I attended Glasgow School of Art in 1965 I think in retrospect I was too young and spent the time devoted to pleasure rather than work and left after the third term.
As I neared retirement I began painting more frequently, and after the boost of being accepted in 2004 for the (then) Singer-Friedlander exhibition (and selling on opening night) I decided to approach a gallery with some work and have been exhibiting since then.
