"David Bowie" by Ed Chapman

.........Ed Chapman is one of the UK's leading mosaic artists. Ed was featured in last weeks Mail on Sunday having completed a beautiful new mosaic of legendary David Bowie!!! His style is instantly recognisable achieving incredible detail through hours of painstaking effort. The work really needs to be looked at up close to appreciate the quality that has been achieved. His portraits in ceramic tile are constructed often with up to 2,000 fragments, each carefully hand-cut and placed. The edges of each portrait are tiled in the same colour as the background to finish the work.

Among his mosaics are portraits of Alan Sugar (done in sugar cubes) and Eric Cantona. Lemmy, the founding member of Motörhead, is among the clients who have commissioned a work by him. In April 2011, Chapman's mosaic of Jimi Hendrix, made of 5000 guitar picks was auctioned for £23,000, with proceeds going to Cancer Research UK

His portraits in ceramic tile are constructed often with up to 2,000 fragments, each carefully hand-cut and placed. The subject matter ranges from iconic film and music legends to portraits of anonymous, beautiful women. He has also created unusual mosaic mannequins and other 3D pieces.

Ed Chapman also creates portraits using torn paper and mosaics in vitreous glass.

He says: "The mosaics are very intricate and it can take days to complete even a small area of finer work. I have studied the technique in depth and attempt to bring the ancient medium of mosaic into the 21st Century with my use of colour and contemporary subjects. I think the mosaic medium produces striking results, particularly with portraits, where the effects are dramatic and impressive. The fragmented results represent the fragmented nature of our lives and our own unique make-up. The work is never finished until it is finished, right until the last piece is in place. In this respect, there is no room for error."

Ed's work is held in collections worldwide and is currently being exhibited across the UK, Europe, New York and Hong Kong.
