............. BY THE HIGHLY PRESTIGIOUS ARTIST HELEN TARR!!!!
As an artist I have been primarily concerned with painting Birmingham’s urban landscape. I paint its changing scenery not only as new buildings go up and old ones come down, but also the transformations caused by the seasons, weather and time of day. Working from my own photographs and painting in oils on canvas, I aim to capture something of the atmosphere and life of the city. I am also interested in reproducing in paint the distortions of colour and tone that occur in the photograph and how these effects lift the scene from the ordinary to the extraordinary.

About the Artist - Helen Tarr MA
Helen Tarr Artist Biography
Helen Tarr (b.1966) grew up on her family’s farm in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds. Her early love of drawing and painting was encouraged by her art teachers at secondary school and she went on to achieve BA Hons and Master’s degrees in Fine Art, specialising in oil painting.
The urban landscape of Birmingham became an important theme in her paintings during her 20 years living there, then in 2015 she moved to the National Forest in East Staffordshire and revived her deep connection to the rural landscape.
Her work has been selected for many group exhibitions and she has recently held two major solo exhibitions in Gloucestershire and Derbyshire. She has paintings in private collections in the UK, mainland Europe and North America. In 2023 she won the Parker Harris Prize and People’s Choice prize for her work ‘Still-life with Lemons’ in The Artist exhibition at Patchings Art Festival in Nottinghamshire. Helen is also an experienced art tutor and produces regular demonstration articles and videos for The Artist magazine and Painters Online.
‘One of the best still-lifes on show. Helen’s confident and experienced eye and direct treatment of the subtle variations of lost-and-found passages suggest detail without overstatement’
David Curtis RSMA ROI, judge The Artist Open Art competition 2023, responding to Still-life with Lemons, winner of the Parker Harris Award.

I also paint rural landscapes and still-life subjects. My landscapes are often inspired by the beautiful South Gloucestershire Cotswolds and Severn Estuary, the places where I grew up, but I can usually find a subject where ever I go. These landscapes, like all my paintings, are primarily concerned with light and atmosphere and creating a dynamic and lively response to the subject. The still-life studies are an opportunity to work from direct observation, evoking the subject and capturing the changing light.
