In 1504 according to the anonymous Codice Magliabecchiano, Leonardo di Vinci and his friend Giovanni di Gavina were passing the Spini Banking House in Florence where they encountered a group of intellectuals discussing a passage from Dante. They asked di Vinci for his view just as Michelangelo happened to be passing. The group invited Michelangelo to join the discussion, when di Vinci snapped " Michelangelo will be able to tell you what it means ! " Michelangelo sensing Leonardos hostility replied " Explain it yourself, horse modeller, unable to cast a statue in bronze, you were forced to give up the attempt ! " Then stomped off. Leonardo was left angry and embarrassed. The two hated each other and never spoke again.
