This lovely Edition of the painting "Olaf's Return" the last in a series of 3 paintings that tells the sad story of King Hardrada's failed attempt to invade England in 1066. In this third painting Olaf returns to Norway!!!
The Turneresque style shows the sad return of Harald Hardrada's son Olaf to Norway. Olaf's Viking ship appears through the mist with the royal dragon sail. Harald Hardrada was killed at the battle of Stamford bridge along with 4500 Vikings. Olaf was allowed to leave England unharmed on condition he never invaded England again.
This battle marked the end of full scale invasions of England from Scandinavia, and was the turning point of Viking activity in that area.
