This Rare Masterpiece " Valley of Death" shows the infamous charge of the Light Brigade. The Painting shows Lord Cardigan who led the charge which occurred during the Battle of Balaclava on October 25, 1854 during the Crimean War. It is best remembered in the famous poem entitled The Charge of the Light Brigade by Lord Tennyson, whose lines "Into the Valley of Death rode the 600" have made the charge a symbol of warfare both at its most reckless and courageous.Lucan received an order from the army commander Lord Raglan stating that "Lord Raglan wishes the cavalry to advance rapidly to the front and try to prevent the enemy carrying away the guns. " The order was carried by Captain Nolan who may have added to the orders. In the painting he is in the foreground having just been hit. The charge was made by the Light Brigade of the British cavalry, consisting of the 4th and 13th Light Dragoons, 17th Lancers (MOTTO DEATH OR GLORY ), and the 8th and 11th Hussars, under the command of Major General the Earl of Cardigan. Together with the Heavy Brigade comprising the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards, the 5th Dragoon Guards, the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons and the Scots Greys, commanded by Major General J Yorke-Scarlett, . Overall command of the cavalry resided with the Lord Lucan. His famous great grandson is still missing !!!!!! Cardigan survived the battle. .......................

Leon Goodman has been a professional artist for the majority of his working life. His work has been sold at The Omell Gallery, Ascot, as well as Christies, the fine art auction house in London. Many of his works have sold to the U.S for thousands of pounds. (Please check out www.leon-goodman.com ) Since seeing his work, Risborough Art Gallery have made him a regularly featured artist. Leon’s philosophy is that it is not the delineation of the subject which is important, but its fragmentation. He believes a strictly photographic image does not allow the viewer to participate in the painting. If the image is fragmented, the viewer can imagine for himself the missing parts and involve himself in the creation of the whole image. The viewer has seen his own interpretation of the fragmented images; the next viewer may see something different.
