"Nusch Éluard" 1938 (After Picasso) by David Aldus
Following her acting career in Berlin during the 1920s, Maria Benz or Nusch Eluard settles in Paris where she meets Paul Eluard in the street who has just separated from his wife Gala who has left for Salvador Dali. A muse to the Surrealist movement to whom her lover belongs, she is the subject of sensual nude photographies by Man Ray and the key inspiration to Paul Eluard's poems. The couple marries in 1934. During the 1930s, Pablo Picasso becomes a close friend of the Eluards and the painter often depicts Nusch while it is strongly believed they both went on a romantic affair, approved by Paul Eluard who seemed to appreciate the concept of ménage-à-trois, having previously 'lent' his first wife, Gala to Max Ernst. Nusch Eluard incarnated with her husband an iconic couple of the Surrealist movement but she also embodied the image of an independent, unconventional and highly erotic woman who created an art of her own with her eccentric collages and left a whole group of artists broken with her sudden death. Hopefully, Paul Eluard's words revive the enlivening muse:'Et plus je te voyais vivre à côté de moi - Plus je te confondais avec l'aube et l'été'.
"And the more I saw you live next to me - I confused you more with the dawn and summer itself"
