Since the beginning of 2013 Iva has been working on forming collaborations with likeminded artists and musicians. Her most recent collaborations are with an emerging Japanese artist and a renowned English photographer. Their parallel life stories have a lot in common, saturated with strange encounters, unbelievable coincidences and the strong childhood desire to belong. Failure to learn and obey the acceptance codes of society is also something we share.

After years of materializing and disseminating conceptual foci through an integration of traditional and digital techniques, Iva ended up with the visual language so typical of her current body of work. Existential themes, such as the transient nature of love and youth, are dealt with by creating a chain of conflict and resolve. Obvious danger is contradicted by an absence of fear.  Gendernormative ideals are replaced by beautiful imperfections. And so on.

Iva Troj

When I first started introducing contemporary elements in otherwise traditional style work, I was astounded by the confusion it caused. It didn’t take long to realize that the evident clash between connotations caused more than just confusion, it also led to changes of perception. I found myself in a position where I could influence people’s attitudes towards concepts such as beauty and gender. But, before that could happen, my own expression needed to become less obvious and more cross-disciplinary. My art needed to raise questions and not give answers. Paintings needed to be “explained” in a narrative and I, who usually shied away from theorizing my art, all of a sudden had to step in and discuss it. 

I’ve been studying traditional art techniques from the age of thirteen. Growing up in Eastern Europe was a blessing in disguise when it comes to education. Although I feared our monthly visits to the town morgue I learned anatomy. Although I disliked the rudeness and misogyny of my teachers, I learned how form, lines, light and color interact to build a narrative.

When I crossed the border between East and West I found myself empty of ideas. Yes, I knew a lot about basic painting and drawing, but I had no idea what to do with that knowledge as the reality I grew up in was dying and I knew nothing of the West. It took me years to find the right balance between the two. I learned basic programming some time in the beginning of the 90s and taught myself vector graphics. Computers have helped me think ever since. I sketch for months before I pick up a pencil. Because of that intersection of old and new my technique has evolved to something very personal. Everything memorable I see or think is either used immediately or stored away for later use.

I strongly believe that the future of arts is in collaborations. I also think that this process has already started as the elitist notion of high culture saturating the world of fine art is beginning to dissolve. Youth culture anywhere in the western world is a proof of that.

By saying that I do not in any way claim that working with other artists is easy. On the contrary, finding the right (for me) people to work with was very hard. I spent decades looking for somebody who could see through my eyes the way people did where I grew up – the mountains on the Bulgarian/Greek border. As I moved farther and farther away from The Sacar Mountain I met fewer and fewer people who spoke the same emotional and visual language. Growing up with all knowing, powerful storytellers and healers, learning from them then watching them disappear, made me distant and unwilling to communicate.
