Tribute to Fragonard Jean-Honore Fragonard painted this scene in the 18th Century, considered to be a masterpiece of the Rococo era.
It is often thought the lady on the swing is the wife of the gentleman in the far lower right-hand corner of the painting, who is supposedly unaware of the younger gentleman on the left-hand side of the painting. This younger gentleman has crept up and is endeavouring to glimpse up the lady's skirts. The lady is co-operating and has deliberately kicked off her shoe aiming it towards the young man.
After much study, Aldus has found a different interpretation and believes the figures portray a far different theme than the one generally accepted.
He bases this on the left hand young man's posture: he is falling backwards, his hands expressing surprise. Would it not be more convincing if it was postulated that he has approached too closely to the lady and the swing is coming straight at him? He is definitely reeling backwards to avoid it hitting him.
The lady has found the man on the right is swinging her too high, and he has a wicked look, deliberately teasing the lady while her skirts are beyond her control, exposing far too much of her legs, etc.
Fragonard has also left other clues to the lady's plight. It can be seen by the child angel directly below the swing, on the right of another child angel who has a protective arm round its partner, that its eyes are directed towards the lady's dishabille. This is Fragonard behaving naughtily, and hinting of a risque theme far more sophisticated than a peeping tom creeping through the bushes while her unwitting husband supposedly cannot see him metres away!
A mere glance at the man on the right will also ascertain he is quite young and is grinning in alliance with the other man. The both are wickedly taking advantage of the young lady, a fact Fragonard has balanced with the young lady's swing threatening to hit the man on the left, thus giving the lady the advantage of surprise over the two unscrupulous men.
Rothschild and Jules de Polignac, two major collectors of art, have had copies copies made of Fragonard's 'The Swing'. The original of 'The Swing' is kept in Britain's Wallace Collection.
