The artist is not merely taking a cheap shot at MacDonalds - an easy target. He says that MacDonalds do a good job at providing cheap and nutritious food all over the world (at least that's what his solicitor told him to say!?). In fact the Ronald MacDonald plastic dummy is an iconic representation of the success of western food production that is now so cheap that it is available on demand for fun. The starving child is another iconic image of a different world which is now only two hours away from anywhere. The artist is suggesting the might of western production should be brought to bear on the third world and its problem, and indeed it is. This can be a celebration of western aid or a suggestion that we could do more, it's up to you.
