"DON GIOVANNI"    by Leon Goodman

The gigantic figure on stage is the ghost of Mozart's Father in the guise of Commendatore (Donna Anna's father) who has risen from one of the tombs on stage to castigate Don Giovanni!!!. In Act I,  Don Giovanni had killed Donna Anna's Father in a sword fight after the attempted rape of his daughter !!!! This is the last act in the opera, ‘Don Giovanni’, written by Amadeus Mozart.

Operated by long poles each manhandled by two to three stage assistants, he is threatening Don Giovanni, vowing that if Giovanni doesn’t stop his evil ways he will be cast into Hell - a huge hole in the stage just a few metres behind a gesticulating Giovanni.

After some terrifically dramatic singing, Giovanni finally defies Donna Anna's father and boasts he will continue his dissolute life regardless.

In a terrific rage Commendatore consigns his Giovanni to Hell.

Giovanni falls into the hole, screaming as he falls.

This was Mozart’s last opera. He died shortly after he’d conducted its first performance.  I believe, he also conducted it.

These last facts may seem quite ordinary, but there is a poignant twist.  Mozart’s real father was a monster, forcing the child to constantly practice on the piano {harpsichord]. Mozart was a genius and became so adept playing the piano, he had to perform his skill by playing the piano in front of the King of England George III and Queen Charlotte three times when aged six.

It is conjectured, Mozart wrote ‘Don Giovanni’ as revenge on his father and his fanatical bullying, but even in this last attempt at asserting his manhood, Mozart failed. The last act has his father succeeding, condemning Giovanni {Mozart} to a horrible death, falling into Hell. Mozart saw this opera performed, and it must have had a terrible effect on him.

Shortly after writing this powerful opera Mozart died mysteriously. It has always been rumoured the Court’s official opera composer, Callieri?, poisoned him, jealous of the opera ‘Don Giovanni’s’ success.

Leon Goodman has been a professional artist for the majority of his working life. His work has been sold at The Omell Gallery, Ascot, as well as Christies, the fine art auction house in London. Many of his works have sold to the U.S for thousands of pounds. (Please check out www.leon-goodman.com ) Since seeing his work, Risborough Art Gallery have made him a regularly featured artist. Leon’s philosophy is that it is not the delineation of the subject which is important, but its fragmentation. He believes a strictly photographic image does not allow the viewer to participate in the painting. If the image is fragmented, the viewer can imagine for himself the missing parts and involve himself in the creation of the whole image. The viewer has seen his own interpretation of the fragmented images; the next viewer may see something different.
