beautiful rare and unusual painting "Orpheus and Eurydice" is an
illustration of the famous tragic story of Orpheus and his lover
Eurydice.
Eurydice is tragically killed by a nest of deadly vipers. On hearing the news Orpheus is inconsolable. He longs for death to be with her and plays such sad songs that even the Gods weep! The Gods pity Orpheus and tell him to journey to the underworld and use his music to soften the hearts of the Guardians of the Dead -Hades and Persephone. Hades agrees and allows Orpheus into the underworld of the dead and to take Eurydice back with him to live again. Hades tells Cerberus the 3 headed dog (pictured) to allow their safe passage. Hades makes one condition to his deal. Orpheus must promise not to look at Eurydice until she leaves the underworld. The two lovers, overjoyed, clamber up the murky steps of the Underworld to the light and Life. Orpheus nearing the top,his love so powerful, cannot resist a quick glance. Eurydice is torn back screaming to the world of the dead, Forever!!!
