"Ragnar Lothbrok and the Seer" (IX - Ragnar Series) by Leon Goodman

This stunning painting capturing the meeting of Ragnar Lothbrok and the Seer!!!! The Seer is an oracle in Kattegat. Seers are mystics and soothsayers with supernatural powers who can communicate with the gods and answer questions about the future and one's fate in life. Vikings believe that their fate is already decided, and they turn to seers to translate the gods' wishes and intentions. The Seer at Kattegats  past is obscure as his own character. It is unknown if he is deformed by birth or by disease, or even if he is blind. However his shamanic abilities can be confirmed as well as his visions which probably made him one of the most revered characters in Kattegat. Enjoying a status sometimes more important than the king itself as he is seen as someone who lies between two worlds and is in contact with the gods. As well as seeing the future makes him not only respected but necessary.

The he Seer was fanatically devoted to the Norse gods. The Seer, like Floki, sees other religions as a threat to their gods. When Earl Haraldson reveals his doubt about the existence of the gods, the Seer laughs at him as if he is a fool. The Seer is also disturbed by his own visions, once telling Lagertha that he does not wish to tell her the future since he only sees sorrows.("All Change") The seer also tends to think and speak in laconics, which are predicates that were most anciently created to slow down the progress of somebody. This, however, indicates quite a strong visual mind, much like Floki, but overly active nerves, for the priest is in fact so inert, that he resides in a state of self-derived hermeticism, rather than actively thinking on his feet, and it is in itself a horrible condition to be in, in the more hustle-driven environment which encompasses Vikings. However unlike Floki he doesn't seem to be intolerant or fear the influence of other religions especially Christianity. He never shows any kind of feelings like fear, happiness, ambition or preocupation. Neither shows any kind of political view or afiliation as he is seen giving counsils to Ragnar, Earl Haraldson, Jarl Borg and Rollo sometimes warning one against another. He also didn't care about the aparition of Harbard. Which seemed to be a manifestation of the Gods. and even showed him suffering in one of his related dreams.

Quotes “ I see an eagle. I see that an eagle hovers over you. But I also see that you yourself are the eagle. ” – The Seer to Jarl Borg, Eye For an Eye “ I see a harvest celebrated in blood. I see a trickster whose weapon cleaves you. I see a city made of marble. And a burning, broiling ocean. ” – The Seer to Lagertha, Mercenary

The Seer appears to be afflicted with leprosy, and lives alone. If not for his skills as a shamanic Seidman, he would likely be an outcast. But instead he is one the most respected characters in Kattegat. The normal term for a "seer" in Norse society would be a Seidmadhr or Spaemadhr, though it was rare for a man to be practicing 'magic', so this role normally belonged to women called Völvas. The reference to 'blind seers' is common in Celtic culture: some sources claim that the irish fildhe (druid-poets) were ritually blinded with hot iron, and blind prophets such as the Greek Tiresias (or even the bard Homer himself) suggest that ritual blinding of prophets and bards was seen as a way of ensuring that their prophetic or poetic powers could be drawn only from spiritual sources.

England's history with Vikings runs deep!!! The Vikings actually controlled half of England with the Danelaw so all Northern place names are Viking! Many Northern English Folk have SON on the end of their surnames like PatterSON like Scandinavian people!!! The English language has many Viking words and Northern English folk to this day don't say "The" before words which is the same as the Norwegian/Swedish/Danish language!!!!! Southern English folk would say today for example - "in THE Kitchen" more like modern German so "in DER Küche". A Northern English person would say today "in Kitchen" like Norwegian "i  Kjøkkenet"

Vikings also lay claim to most of the thrones of modern Europe as King of England William the Conqueror (a Norman Viking) was descended from Rollo a Norwegian Viking who was so large they called him Rollo "The Walker" as no horse was big enough to carry him!!! Our modern Royal Family are blood descended from Rollo and therefore so are most of Europe's Monarchs and Ruling Families!!!!!

Leon Goodman has been a professional artist for the majority of his working life. His work has been sold at The Omell Gallery, Ascot, as well as Christies, the fine art auction house in London. Many of his works have sold for thousands of pounds to the U.S.A. Since seeing his work, Risborough Art Gallery have made him a regularly featured artist. Leon’s philosophy is that it is not the delineation of the subject which is important, but its fragmentation. He believes a strictly photographic image does not allow the viewer to participate in the painting. If the image is fragmented, the viewer can imagine for himself the missing parts and involve himself in the creation of the whole image. The viewer has seen his own interpretation of the fragmented images; the next viewer may see something different.
