This is a stunning new Viking painting " The Norns " .This superb
painting shows Sigurd or in old Norse Sigurðr with the three
Norns.Sigurd was a legendary hero of Norse mythology, as well as the
central character in the Völsunga saga. The earliest representations
for his legend come in pictorial form from 7 runestones in Sweden ,
most notably the Ramsund carving and the Gök Runestone ( both 11th
century) Here Sigurd seeks out the Norns who were powerful maiden
jotuns who lived at the roots of Odin's Yggdrasil. The three Norns here
are Urðr (Wyrd), Verðandi and Skuld. They draw water from the well of
Urðr (well of fate) and take sand that lies around it, which they pour
over the ash Yggdrasil so that its branches will not rot.Sigurd seeks
out the Norns for wisdom after learning about them from the dragon
Fafnir who is dying from a mortal wound from him. Sigurd asks Fafnir of
many things, among them the nature of the norns. Fafnir explains that

Fáfnir, alls þik fróðan kveðaok vel margt vita, hverjar ro þær nornir,er
nauðgönglar rook kjósa mæðr frá mögum."-Fáfnir kvað:. "Sundrbornar
mjöksegi ek nornir vera,eigu-t þær ætt saman;sumar eru áskunngar, sumar
alfkunngar, sumar dætr Dvalins." Sigurth spake:. "Tell me then,
Fafnir, for wise thou art famed,And much thou knowest now:Who are the
Norns who are helpful in need,And the babe from the mother

they were; Some to gods, others to elves are kin,And Dvalin's daughters
