Dorchester Hotel,

London.
Mayfair, and particularly Park Lane, has long been the home of the exclusively high-end and very expensive hotel. It boasts the grand dame of all, the Dorchester at Park Lane, which re-opened this year after a £125 million makeover.
The lure of the London Olympics 2012 is obviously a factor in this flurry of hotel development.
" The space is impressive and the long room with double-height ceilings lined with 16 of Damien Hirst's limited-edition Psalms series displayed together for the first time, lent it an almost church-like quality.Original modern art by British artists - Christian Furr, Sir Peter Blake - also features in every bedroom and suite."
The Evening Standard

Christian says about his work ....
" I am interested in the relationships between people. The space between things and people. The Tacit conversations people have in modern life. "
Christian Furr became the youngest artist to have ever officially painted Queen Elizabeth II, when in 1995 - at the age of only twenty eight ( 28 ) - he was invited by the Queen to paint her portrait at a sitting in Buckingham Palace. The work was commissioned by and hangs at the Royal Overseas League, St James, London.
Notable recent commissions include a portrait of HRH Crown Prince Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor for Westminster Cathedral and Tim Henman (for Robinsons). Christian has appeared on several television shows judging and teaching Art and written a book, entitled ‘Take Art'.
In June 2004 the artist collected an AoC Gold Award at the House Of Commons, given to further education college alumni who have gone on to achieve excellence in their chosen field. Former winners include Jamie Oliver, Betty Boothroyd and Jimmy Choo.
Born in Heswall, Wirral in 1966. He lives in London with his wife Emma and three daughters.
Furr's paintings echo his cheeky sense of humour, painting the Queen with a twinkle in her eye. Varied, skillfull and hugely popular. Whether tackling celebrity portraits or enigmatic scenes of modern life, he paints with joy, ambition and sheer talent.
He has exhibited around the world and at shows and galleries including the Saatchi Gallery in 2010 when he acted as Judge and curator for the 'Art of Giving', The Royal Society of Portrait Painters, The National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Watercolour Society.
Every artist uses a different method of interaction with their subject. Francis Bacon rarely painted from life; instead, he relied on tiny scraps of pictures in newspapers and magazines for his portraits. Cezanne is believed to have insisted on over 100 sittings with one client! Similarly, Furr has his own way of going about his commissioned works. He begins with a conversation over lunch or dinner as this helps him get to know his subject better; however, he points out that this is subject to change, depending on the client’s needs. Thus far, though, he has never insisted on 100 sittings!
There are no fixed rules to portrait painting and Furr likes to try different things each time. The paintings tend to develop as collaborations between the artist and his subject, resulting in a composite portrait that is not just about facial bone structure, but also a glimpse into the clients life – their likes and dislikes, gestures and behaviour. He is always on the lookout for a fleeting expression or gesture which is revealing, allowing him to capture something unique about his subject.
Furr’s brushstrokes blend in the old masters, with playful contemporary suggestions of alternate realities. Where things are not necessarily black and white. Indeed, his subtle use of colour presents both the truth and variations of it. These visualisations become more evident in his various other works.
Furr has had notable commissions worldwide including HRH Crown Prince Bin Abdul Aziz, Cardinal Cormack Murphy-Connor for Westminster Cathedral & Tim Henman, the British tennis star.
Royal Strokes
In 1995, at the age of 28, Christian Furr became the youngest artist to officially paint Queen Elizabeth II. The sitting took place at Buckingham Palace; and the commissioned portrait hangs at the Royal Over-seas League, St James Street, London.
“His queen is elegant and regal but around the mouth and eyes plays a slight suggestive flicker of a smile. Such an intriguing work.” The Mail on Sunday
Furr believes that art signifies the freedom to create, and this is of paramount importance to him. Art is both aristocratic and playful in nature. It is both illusion and reality, and is what Einstein meant when he said “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is a source of all art and all science….”.
Furr has an affinity towards mirrors which appear in quite a few of his paintings. He is not the first artist to play with the idea of reflection. Velezquez did ' Las Meninos ', and Manet in ' Bar at the Folies-Bergere'.
Quoting Oscar Wilde Furr says , " Give a man a mask and he will speak the truth ; it's the same with mirrors for artists".
Furr has exhibited his work extensively around the world and at shows and galleries including the National Portrait Gallery, Royal Society of Portrait Painters and The Royal Watercolour Society.
He has also written the book ‘The Lost Art’, which provides a step by step guidance on the basics of drawing.
