The Laughing Cavalier (1624) is a famous portrait by the Dutch Golden Age painter Frans Hals in the Wallace Collection in London, which has been described as "one of the most brilliant of all Baroque portraits". The title is an invention of the Victorian public and press, dating from its exhibition in the opening display at the Bethnal Green Museum in 1872-75, just after its arrival in England, where it became famous, much reproduced in prints, and for long one of the best known old master paintings, at least in Britain. The unknown subject is in fact not laughing, but can be said to have an enigmatic smile, much amplified by his upturned moustaches.[2] Whether his eyes do indeed follow the viewer round the room, as popular legend insists, is a matter of personal judgement.
The Somewhat Skeptical Cavalier by Steven Lynch is a homage to the brilliance of the paintings of Franz Hals which can get a little pricy. His throw-away style looks fresh and modern today. The artist has done a painstaking copy of the original but changed the expression to somewhat skeptical, all that work for one joke, ha!.
The original has some latin script on the painting which means that the portrait was painted when the sitter was 26 and in the year 1624, Steven Lynch has altered this to the title and the year of painting.
