"Keats...Beauty that must die". BY THE SUPERB ARTIST TERENCE
VICKRESS............................ The wonderful portrait artist
Terence Vickress has recreated the 19th Century Classic of the tragic, almost unequalled genius, John Keats. Keats was the last born of the English Romantic poets and at only 25 he was the youngest to die !!!
When I have fears that I may cease to beBefore my pen has glean'd my teeming brain,
Before high piled books, in charact'ry,
Hold like rich garners the full-ripen'd grain;
When I behold, upon the night's starr'd face,
Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,
And think that I may never live to trace
Their shadows, with the magic hand of chance;
And when I feel, fair creature of an hour!
That I shall never look upon thee more,
Never have relish in the faery power
Of unreflecting love;—then on the shore
Of the wide world I stand alone, and think,
Till Love and Fame to nothingness do sink.
John Keats 1818. Published after his death.
Terence has used the Classical Renaissance techniques of Chiaroscuro and Sfumato. Chiaroscuro is one of the four canonical painting modes of the Renaissance (the other three being Cangiante, Unione and Sfumato) Chiaroscuro refers to strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition. It is also a technical term used by artists and art historians for using contrasts of light to achieve a sense of volume in modelling three-dimensional objects such as the human body!)
Sfumato, used, refers to a mode of painting in which there are no extreme darks or lights (at the borders), as the brightness values are grouped more or less tightly together around middle gray so sharp edges are lost !!
